What is Clean Eating and Should I be Doing it?

You may have heard the phrase “Clean Eating” floating around the internet and if you are unsure of what this means, don’t worry! By the end of this article we aim to get you up to speed and understanding why you should eat clean and how to do it!

At the end of the day you cannot create changes to your body or reach your health goals without eating a healthy balanced diet and by keeping active. To be eating clean you essentially should be following these five simple rules:

1. Avoid Unhealthy Processed Food.

Clean eating refers to eating non-processed healthy foods. This means ditching the microwave meals and frozen pizza and instead creating wholesome cooking with fresh lean meats and vegetables (or a vegetarian/vegan alternative).

2. Stick to Lean Protein Sources.

Make sure that you are getting plenty of lean protein in your diet. Lean here refers to protein sources that are low in fat such as chicken breast, turkey breast, Quorn or a low-fat mincemeat (5% maximum is ideal). If like many other women, you struggle getting enough protein into your diet, you should consider incorporating protein shakes into your diet plan such as our Complete Recovery Lean Protein, particularly if you exercise regularly.

3. Switch to “Clean” Carbohydrates.

Try to stick to whole grain and whole wheat products wherever possible, these really are so much better for your body than their “white” alternatives! The same can be said for white potato, a much better alternative to this would be sweet potato.

4. Always Read the Label.

Take time to read the ingredients labels. To eat cleanly, you need to avoid products containing cheap filler ingredients, and always pick the ones with lower fat and sugar contents!

5. Don’t Eliminate Every Treat.

This point is one that is probably debatable, as some people (often professional athletes) take their diets so seriously there really is no room to fit in a chocolate coated rice cake here and there, but realistically, many women find sticking to a diet difficult because they must cut out all the foods they enjoy. Instead, choose the healthiest alternative available for your “treats” and enjoy them in small portions whilst resisting the urge to binge! We hope that this guide has helped you better understand clean eating and has inspired you to make changes for eating a cleaner diet and becoming an all-round healthier you!
