The Importance of Warming Up

We are all guilty of sometimes becoming a little too eager to get our workout underway and in the process, we forget to warm up properly. This is a bad idea! If you don’t warm up your muscles properly, you are more likely to pull a muscle during your workout and subsequently you could end up having to take time off from exercise as a result!
Warm ups don’t need to take up a huge amount of time, you just need enough to get your heart pumping and your muscles stretched out!
Here are five ideas to get you warmed up and ready to train:
- 5-10 minutes of cardio
Exercise bike, rowing machine or treadmill (all with low resistance, don’t wear yourself out before your workout has begun!)
- Dynamic stretching
Walking lunges, high knees, heel flicks, arm circles etc.
- Foam rolling
For many, foam rolling is part of a cool down routine but studies have shown that foam rolling in a warm up can be a hugely beneficial activity to activate your muscles before a workout too!
- Replicate your lifts
If you are about to lift weights, warm up by doing the exercise but with less weight. For example, you could complete a warm up set of bench press with just the barbell.
- Medicine Ball
A brilliant way to warm up your core! Try sit ups holding the medicine ball, slam ball, ‘figure of eights” and rotational twists.
