Why You Should Throw Away Your Scales

Are you are eating a healthy well balanced diet and have a regular exercise program but wondering why the number on your scales is still going up? Don’t worry you are building up muscle!

The most common thought running through a lot of minds is “I need to lose weight”. This initial thought is a good thing because it sparks the motivation to exercise and a re-think of what we put into our bodies. However, we must never linger on the idea of having a “goal weight”.

This is because EVERYBODY is built in a different way. We have all heard the phrase “muscle weighs more than fat” which is very true! Muscle is more dense than fat, which is why a girl of 5ft 2” with an athletic toned frame can potentially weigh more than a girl who is 6ft 2” with excess body fat.
This is where BMI (Body Mass Index) can be very wrong and may not accurately represent your body. Most athletes BMI’s will be classed in the “Overweight” or sometimes even “Obese” category because BMI does not allow for muscle or bone density.

Chloe Pickford on the BodyFitness Stage

Take our Ambassador Chloe Pickford for example. She is a size 8 and weighs 57kg in this photograph, which means she would be classed as nearly being in the “Overweight” category on the BMI scale.
Chloe is a Competitive Fitness Athlete and as you can see is in great shape with no excess body fat at all!

Instead of weighing yourself and judging your success on the numbers on a scale, look in the mirror and judge your progress on your shape and tone. Are your muscles becoming more defined? Are you becoming stronger? Is your endurance improving?
Judge yourself on the change you can physically see on your body and on your improvements in the gym/in your sport, not on the number you think should be decreasing on a scale.
